Stories Within

The unwritten chapter

A reflective Bhutan journey for writers, creatives and anyone standing at the edge of a new chapter.

The Journey

What will you write next?

The Unwritten Chapter is a 10 to 18 day customized journey across Bhutan created for writers, artists, creatives and anyone curious about what might come next.

Travel from remote villages in the east to the temples of Bumthang, the wide valley of Phobjikha and the studios of Thimphu. Meet weavers, artists and communities whose traditions have been passed through generations. Walk, make, talk, read, write and allow ideas to emerge without forcing them.

This is Bhutan as both inspiration and interruption. A chance to get away from the familiar and see what appears when you do.

The Thinking

The blank page is not empty. It is waiting

“I am not young enough to know everything.”
Oscar Wilde

The Unwritten Chapter is for people who want time to think, make something, explore an idea or simply become curious again.

Bhutan provides an extraordinary place to do it. Over 18 days, you travel across the country meeting people who create with their hands, from the raw silk weavers of Radhi and Khoma to artists in Thimphu and the Monpa community, where nettle fibre is still woven using traditional methods.

There is time for writing and reflection, but this is not a writing retreat. The ideas come from being out in the world, from the people you meet, the things you see and make, the conversations you have and the long journeys between them.

You do not need to arrive knowing what your next chapter is.

That is rather the point.

What to Expect

Days with more space in them

Designed for anyone ready to turn the page, even if you do not yet know what the next chapter looks like.

Shaped Around You

Every journey is fully customisable and can be shaped around your interests, pace, preferences and the time you have available.

On this journey

Meet the makers
Spend time with master weavers and craftspeople across Bhutan, discovering how ideas, stories and traditions are passed from one generation to the next.

Go far east
Journey to Merak and meet the Brokpa people, discovering a remote mountain culture and stories rarely encountered by visitors to Bhutan.

Write along the way
Keep a journal, follow a thought, start a story or work on something already underway. Time to write is built into the journey, with Bhutan providing the material.

Meet Bhutanese writers and artists
Spend time with local writers, painters and contemporary artists, exchanging ideas and discovering how Bhutan inspires their own creative work.

Find stories in unexpected places
Ancient temples, village homes, mountain passes, monasteries and conversations become starting points for new ideas and new writing.

Meet people you would never otherwise meet
Share meals and conversations with weavers, artists, monastics and remote communities, listening to stories and perspectives very different from your own.

Write the next chapter
Bring the journey together through dedicated writing time, drawing on the people, places and ideas encountered across Bhutan to begin whatever comes next.

GUEST STORIES

In their own words

“I wrote more in those two weeks than I had in the previous six months. Bhutan gave me new things to write about, but more importantly, it gave me the time to actually write.”

Sarah M.

United Kingdom

“I loved that it wasn’t a writing retreat where you sit in a room all day. We were out meeting people, seeing extraordinary places and filling notebooks as we went.”

Emma R.

Australia

“Meeting Bhutanese writers and artists was one of the highlights for me. We talked about where ideas come from, what makes a story worth telling and how differently we all see the world.”

Priya S.

India

“I arrived with half an idea and no idea what to do with it. Somewhere between the long drives, conversations and mornings with my notebook, it started becoming a story.”
