The Thinking

Growing up is not a place you reach. It is a threshold you cross

"While we are not offering just one night in Thimphu—unlike the famous song “One Night in Bangkok”—if done right, the world will be your oyster, and growing up does not happen all at once.

There comes a point when young people need more than another holiday. They need to go somewhere unfamiliar, make their own decisions, meet people whose lives look completely different from theirs and discover that they can handle more than they thought.

One Night in Thimphu is designed around that moment.

There is adventure, independence and plenty of fun, but also experiences that quietly shift perspective. Hike to monasteries, spend time with monks, stay with families, cross mountain roads, raft rivers and head out into Thimphu with local young people.

The idea is not to tell young travellers who they should become. It is to give them the space, freedom and confidence to start figuring that out for themselves."

What to expect

This is Bhutan with the volume turned up

Days can include hiking, motorbike journeys, rafting, cycling and village stays. Evenings might mean a bonfire, live music or discovering Thimphu nightlife with locals. Along the way there are quieter moments too, from meditation with monks to prayer flags, astrology and time spent with families in remote communities. It is social, active and sometimes challenging, with enough independence to make it feel like their journey rather than someone else’s itinerary.

Shaped Around You

Every journey is fully customisable and can be shaped around your interests, pace, preferences and the time you have available.

On this journey

A night out in Thimphu
See a completely different side of Bhutan with local young people, exploring the city after dark and discovering that this Himalayan capital is not quite as quiet as you might expect.

Take the mountain road to Punakha
Travel from Thimphu to Punakha by motorbike, crossing Dochula Pass before ending the day with a sundowner and a night at a homestay.

Hike, raft and get properly outdoors
Climb to Khamsum Yulley Namgyel, spend time in a village and take on the river by raft for a day that is active, social and far removed from ordinary life.

Hang out with young monks
Spend time inside a monastic school, meet monks of a similar age and join a meditation led by the head monk. It is less about religion and more about seeing how differently another young person can live.

Go deeper into mountain life
On the longer journey, travel into remote Laya, hike through the highlands, spend time with a Layap family and learn about weaving, yak culture and life far beyond Bhutan’s towns.

Finish at Tiger’s Nest
End the journey with Bhutan’s most iconic climb, followed by a traditional hot stone bath and a final farewell that marks the end of something bigger than just a trip.

Guest stories

In their own words

“I thought Bhutan was going to be really quiet and probably a bit serious. It was nothing like I expected. We went rafting, rode motorbikes to Punakha and went out in Thimphu with people our age. I came home wanting to travel everywhere.”

Zara M.

United Kingdom

“The best part was being somewhere where everything felt completely different from home. Spending time with the monks was actually one of my favourite days. We talked, played games and realised we were the same age but living totally different lives.”

Noah K.

Netherlands

“I had never travelled without my family before, so I was nervous at the start. By the end I felt like I could handle anything. Laya was incredible because there was no comfort zone left. You just had to get involved.”

Sofia R.

Chile

“It was fun, but it also made me think about things I hadn’t really thought about before. I came back more confident, more independent and definitely more interested in seeing the rest of the world.”
