The Thinking

Some journeys are meant to mark a moment

Not every rite of passage has to belong to youth. Sometimes it comes later, after change, loss, success, uncertainty, or simply the feeling that something in life is shifting.

The Himalayan Rite of Passage is designed around that idea.

The journey begins with time at Phajoding Monastery, where you meet the head lama, meditate and spend time within the monastery before setting out on the Druk Path Trek. From there, the route crosses high ridges, sacred lakes and remote camps before descending into Paro.

There is effort in this journey, but there is also stillness. The walking gives the days purpose. The monasteries and rituals give them meaning. The mountains do the rest.

What to expect

A journey that asks something of you

This is an active journey with several days of trekking at altitude, balanced by monastery stays, meditation, village life and time to recover.

You will hike through the landscapes of the Druk Path, camp beside high mountain lakes, receive a blessing at Jela Dzong and spend time in Haa, where village walks, local food and a hot stone bath bring the pace back down again.

It is physical without being extreme, spiritual without being prescriptive, and reflective without asking you to arrive with answers.

Shaped Around You

Every journey is fully customisable and can be shaped around your interests, pace, preferences and the time you have available.

On this journey

Live for a while inside Phajoding Monastery
Hike above Thimphu to Phajoding and spend time with the head lama, join meditation sessions and experience the quiet routines of monastery life.

Walk the Druk Path
Set out on one of Bhutan’s most beautiful high altitude trails, crossing ridges and passes between Thimphu and Paro with wide Himalayan views along the way.

Sleep beside sacred mountain lakes
Camp near Simkotra Tso and Jimilangtsho, far from roads and towns, surrounded by some of the most pristine landscapes on the journey.

Receive a blessing at Jela Dzong
As the trail begins its descent toward Paro, stop at Jela Dzong for a blessing before completing the Druk Path on foot.

Slow down in the Haa Valley
After the trek, move into the quieter pace of Haa. Stay in a village guesthouse, cook with local families, ride through the valley and soak in a traditional hot stone bath beside the stream.

End at Tiger’s Nest
Finish the journey with the climb to Tiger’s Nest, followed by the impermanence experience and a final Bhutanese farewell in Paro.

Guest stories

In their own words

“I did this trip just after turning fifty and it felt strangely well timed. The trek was challenging enough to make me work for it, but the days at Phajoding gave the whole journey a depth I wasn’t expecting. I came away feeling like I had marked something important.”

Thomas G.

New Zealand

“The night beside Jimilangtsho is the one I still think about. No phones, no road noise, just the lake, the mountains and the camp. It was probably the first time in years that I had nowhere else to be.””

Aisha R.

Kenya

“I was worried that the spiritual side might feel a little forced, but it never did. The conversations with the lama were thoughtful and very human. You could take from it what you wanted, which I really appreciated.”

Luca P.

Italy

“The combination worked beautifully. You trek hard for several days, then suddenly you are in Haa eating with a family and sitting in a hot stone bath beside a stream. By the time we reached Tiger’s Nest, it felt like the right way to finish.”
