The Thinking

The most interesting parts of Bhutan are not always the ones you can simply visit

Some places require an introduction. Some stories only emerge when you sit down with the person who knows them. And some of Bhutan’s most remarkable traditions live quietly within homes, monasteries and communities far beyond the usual route.

The Hidden Bhutan Series is built around access.

Meet a Bhutanese historian and explore the ideas that have shaped the kingdom. Sit with weavers as they work with silk and natural dyes. Meditate with monks and learn about monastic life. Travel into remote communities where indigenous knowledge, folklore and craft are still passed from one generation to the next.

This is not about seeing more of Bhutan. It is about being allowed closer.

What to expect

Encounters you could not arrange on your own

The journey moves from Thimphu and Punakha into the forests of Royal Manas, the communities around Trongsa and the cultural heartland of Bumthang before returning to Paro.

Along the way, days are shaped by people rather than landmarks. Meet craftspeople in their workshops, share meals with communities, speak with conservationists, stay in a private camp near Royal Manas and sit with wisdom keepers who preserve some of Bhutan’s oldest indigenous traditions.

There are iconic places too, but they are part of a much richer story. The real privilege is getting close enough to understand the people behind them.

Shaped Around You

Every journey is fully customisable and can be shaped around your interests, pace, preferences and the time you have available.

On this journey

Conversations that open Bhutan up
Sit down with historians, thinkers and local experts for conversations about Bhutan’s history, Gross National Happiness and the ideas shaping the country today.

Inside the world of Bhutanese craft
Step into a weaver’s home, see how natural dyes are created and applied to silk, and meet artisans whose knowledge has been handed down through generations.

Time inside monastic life
Go beyond visiting monasteries. Meditate with a head monk, meet young monks and spend time understanding the routines, beliefs and human stories behind Bhutan’s spiritual traditions.

A private camp near Royal Manas
Journey south into the landscapes around Royal Manas National Park and stay at a private camp arranged by Himalayan Echoes. Walk through the forest, raft the Manas River and end the day beside the water at sunset.

Wisdom keepers of the Mongpa
Walk into a Mongpa community to meet some of Bhutan’s earliest settlers. Discover traditional homes, nettle weaving, Bon practices, folklore and indigenous knowledge shared by the people who continue to preserve them.

Stories inside an old palace
Travel into the Tang Valley to Ugyen Choling Palace and Museum, where you will meet descendants of the family and experience Bhutanese history through the people who still live among it.

Guest stories

In their own words

“I had been to Bhutan before and thought I knew the country reasonably well. I was completely wrong. This journey took us into homes, workshops and conversations I would never have known how to access. It felt less like sightseeing and more like being invited in.”

Julien M.

Belgium

“The afternoon with the Mongpa community was extraordinary. We sat listening to stories about their beliefs and history, watched the weaving and shared lunch together. Nothing felt performed for us. It was one of those rare days when you realise how little you knew before you arrived.”

Naoko T.

Japan

“I loved that the journey never felt like we were ticking off attractions. We met historians, monks, artisans and conservationists, and every conversation added another layer to what we were seeing. By the end I understood Bhutan in a completely different way.”

Lindiwe K.

South Africa

“The private camp near Royal Manas was a highlight, but what I remember most are the people. Sitting with a weaver in her home, talking with monks, meeting the family at Ugyen Choling. There was a sense throughout the trip that doors were being opened for us that normally remain closed.”
